From Anxiety To Calm Presence: Dharma and Yoga

Anxiety and hyper vigilance can be constant companions, which derail our well-being. When we align the mind with the slower rhythms of the body and unwind, we can reconnect with our innate calm embodied presence.

This retreat will offer Dharma teachings on understanding anxiety and cultivating self compassion. We will connect to the body through somatic movement, yoga postures, and breath work. Our practice will offer techniques to ground the nervous system and create a container of safety and support to allow us to meet all that (could be what) arises. The yoga sessions will be both dynamic and nourishing for ease and resilience.

Stability, Ease, and Insight: A Prajna Yoga Immersion

Stability, Ease, and Insight: A Prajna Yoga Immersion

October 25-27, 2019 |  Rainforest Yoga; Juneau, AK

This weekend immersion will combine the powerful techniques of asana, anatomy, pranayama, and meditation, with Dharma teachings. The asanas will be explored through a unique combination of somatic movement, anatomical illumination, and skillful sequencing. Meditation will give insight into the mind, heart, and emotional body. Each session will include postures, breath, wisdom teachings, and meditation. This immersion is open to all practitioners who wish to gain a deeper understanding of yoga.

Weekend Schedule:
The Fans of the Hips ~ Friday evening 10/25

The hip joints and pelvis are supported by muscular fans that, when well balanced, allow for ease of movement and fluidity through the pelvic bowl and organs, and provide stability in the lower back. This session will stabilize and release asymmetry and stagnation in and around the pelvis, and offer novel approaches to classical asanas. Ease in the hips will facilitate our meditation posture and ability to rest in awareness.

Freeing the Shoulders, Rib Basket, and Diaphragm ~ Saturday morning 10/26
It is common for the shoulders to slump forward due to repetitive strain and poor posture. This may result in pain in the neck, tension between the shoulder blades, carpal tunnel syndrome, and collapse around the heart and lungs. This session will open the upper chest and stabilize the shoulder blades. We will practice supine, seated, and standing postures to set the shoulders efficiently on the spine, unwind the rib basket, and facilitate deep diaphragmatic breathing. Pranayama will offer a bridge from asana to meditation.

Releasing the Neck, Jaw, and Cranium ~ Saturday afternoon 10/26
This session will address the neck, jaw, and cranium. We will investigate how proper alignment of the skull brings balance to the entire system, both in asana and meditation. Through inversions, supported asanas, somatic practices, and chanting, we will pacify the nervous system. We will emphasize pratyahara, or tending to the senses, through working with the eyes and tongue, deep inner listening, and tracking internal sensations. This will facilitate a spacious mind and the possibility of insight.

True Core ~ Sunday Morning 10/27
A session for experienced practitioners and teachers.
The core is the innermost sheath of the body, arising from the inner arches of the feet, inner legs, and the muscles closest to the spine. The core provides deep support for the organs and low back. When we engage the core, we use less force and increase ease in all movements, including arm balances and inversions. This session will offer a dynamic intermediate practice with modifications to accommodate all experienced practitioners.

Calming the Anxious Body-Mind ~ Sunday Afternoon 10/27
This session will feature asana designed to support meditation.
Anxiety and fatigue can be constant companions that can derail our well-being. When we align the mind with the slower rhythms of the body, we can unwind and reconnect with a calm embodied presence. Our practice will offer techniques to ground the nervous system, relieve insomnia, and gather the mind. The yoga sessions will be both dynamic and nourishing for ease and resilience.

Tias Little ~ Embodied Dharma: Yoga, Connective Tissue and Interbeing

Weekend Event with Tias Little at Spirit Rock Meditation Center

Yoga historically has emphasized connection to a unified field of being. In the microcosm of the body, all structures are interwoven. Connective tissue is the physical structure that holds us together, connecting the liver to the lung, and the tibia to the tailbone. In the macrocosm of the larger world, all things are interwoven and interdependent. Thich Nhat Hanh has called this “inter-being”.

In this week-end immersion, we will practice movements that enhance the flow of fascia through the body, and through insight meditation and dharma study, we will investigate how all things within us and around us are interwoven.

Schedule:
Friday 6-9pm:
Settling IN: Releasing the Legs and Pelvis

Saturday 10am-5:30pm:
Centering IN: Opening and Strengthening the Core
Breathing IN: Expanding the Diaphragm

Sunday 10am-5:30pm:
Moving IN: Building Elasticity in the Lungs and Ribs
Listening IN: Working with the Cranium, Jaw and Ear in Yoga

Yoga and Zen: Embodied Practice, Embodied Wisdom

  • Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (map)

Autumn is nature’s time to turn inward; leaves fall and energy returns to roots. Amidst the demands of daily life we can become stuck in constant outward growth. Our view may narrow and body movements become confined, as if fixating on a single star while failing to see the vastness of the night sky. In a day of mindful yoga and Zen practice we will study our perpetual forward movement and explore what it means to “take the backward step”; allow our breath to expand, our bodies to unwind, and our awareness to widen. In doing so, we nourish our own roots. We will dance with the innate presence available in every moment and return home nourished with a fresh perspective and rejuvenated spirit.

Dharma and Yoga: The Practice of Non-Harming

The foundation of Dharma and Yoga is ahimsa or non-harming. Ahimsa can be realized through a kind and nurturing approach to the body. In this day retreat, we will cultivate ahimsa through mindfulness of the nuance of sensation in the body and the subtle pathway of the breath. This will foster calm abiding from which we can see into and transform our underlying habits of aversive thinking and forcing the body.
Our practice will combine mindful asana, somatic movement, pranayama, and meditation on kindness.

Cost: Sliding Scale $75 – 200.
